On Wednesday, 15th May 2024, Radius Law and The Motor Ombudsman are coming together to host their Annual Conference – Business & Law Update for the Automotive sector.

We all know the automotive sector is undergoing rapid change, with developments around the future of the car (electrified, autonomous, shared & connected), as well as the new business and retail models being adopted by industry.

Whether it be enforced by legal changes, policy implementation or the demands of the consumer, change is inevitable. Therefore, preparation is required to optimise our transition towards an era of automotive that we have not seen before.

This annual industry event will unpack these issues, explaining how they are likely to impact your business and the changes that you may wish to consider.

Speakers

Alison Ashley

Partner, RSM

Having worked within the motor retail sector for the past twelve years, Alison is a motor retail sector expert and RSM’s national head of the industry team of specialists.  Alison has advised a wide range of clients in the motor sector and provided hands-on support throughout their business lifecycle. She has a wealth of experience in a providing a complete advisory service; including compliance, corporate finance, internal control and restructuring.

As well as leading audits, Alison works alongside our service line experts to deliver specialist advisory projects including independent business reviews, debt advisory and dealership transaction advice.

She regularly hosts RSM’s series of motor retail events and contributes to trade publications and media.


Alistair McCrindle

Operations Director

With 28 years of experience in the automotive industry, Ali brings a wealth of knowledge and skills to his role as Head of Operations at Autotech Training. A car enthusiast since he was a child, Ali began his career in the motor industry as an apprentice at age 16. Since then, he has gone on to successfully complete multiple qualifications, including MIMI CAE, CertEd, Level 4 EQA, Level 4 LIQA, Level 3 Assessor, and achieving multiple motor vehicle diplomas.

Prior to joining Autotech Training in 2023, he had worked in different sectors of the automotive industry, most recently as an EQA for The IMI and Deputy Head of Curriculum. Experience gained whilst supporting students to achieve their goals and secure employment at leading automotive/motorsport companies means Ali has a keen eye for high-quality education in the automotive industry.


Colin Bull

Head of Customer Service and Dispute Resolution, The Motor Ombudsman

Colin has over 15 years’ experience in senior management, acting as a department head across a range of industries, including at Ofcom. With a passion for people management, continual improvement and process re-engineering, his role within the senior management at team is to enable the successful delivery of The Motor Ombudsman’s five-year business plan, through engagement of people and excellent customer service.


Dr Andrew Tongue

Research Director, ICDP

Dr Andrew Tongue is Research Director of ICDP, an international research-based organisation focused on automotive distribution, including the supply and retailing of new and used vehicles, after sales, network structures and operations.  Through its collaborative programmes, consultancy, data services, and events, ICDP works with vehicle makers, dealers, suppliers, and related organisations to improve the quality and effectiveness of the distribution model.

Andrew has over 30 years of experience in the automotive industry since he completed a Doctoral study looking at the evolution of distribution channel structures across the European car market.  He also leads ICDP’s regulatory work, advising clients and other key industry actors on developments in the legislative environment governing the selling, marketing and use of vehicles.

Passionate about early motoring and motorsport in particular, he enjoys running a collection of vintage and classic cars, and is a Clerk of the Course at race circuits and hill-climbs around the UK.


Iain Larkins

Director, Radius Law

Iain founded Radius Law in 2013 and leads its automotive practice – one of the largest dedicated automotive law teams in the UK representing automotive manufacturers, retailers, parts suppliers and trade associations.

Prior to establishing Radius, Iain was the Chief Legal and Compliance Officer for the Mercedes-Benz UK Group.


Ian Leedham

European Legal Director, LKQ Europe

Ian has practiced In-House for over 20 years in a variety of industries. He has worked for LKQ Corporation for the last 5 years, as European Vice President for Legal, Compliance & Public Affairs.  LKQ is a NASDAQ listed leading distributor of auto market aftermarket parts, collision parts & paint, remanufactured and salvage parts. Operating in over 30 countries worldwide.   Ian is passionate about driving greater efficiency into legal practice and finding more efficient ways in which the OEM’s and After-Market can operate competitively to provide data, parts and services to vehicle owners in a quickly changing market.


Ian Plummer

Commercial Director, Auto Trader UK

Ian joined Auto Trader in 2017, having spent over 20 years in the automotive industry in senior global roles across manufacturers and retailer groups. Currently, he leads Auto Trader’s relationships with automotive manufacturers, lenders and media agencies as well as franchised retailers to ensure Auto Trader’s technology and expertise delivers value and revenue for partners in both the new and used car space. He is also on the Board of the Institute of the Motoring Industry and is a regular media commentator as well as being an active lobbyist for the policies required to ensure the electric transition is equitable and accessible.

Prior to joining Auto Trader, Ian worked at Volkswagen where he was Director of Sales Operations in the UK. He also has a wealth of experience in commercial roles across the globe, including working in France for 10 years.

Ian holds a BA (Hons) from Loughborough University in Economics, Politics and French, and an MBA from IMD-Theseus Institute in France.

Jason Cranswick

Jason is COO of Marubeni Auto Investment (UK) Limited. Having spent 35 years in the automotive sector, he has gained a unique CV from his leadership roles in Scale Dealer Groups, OEM and Disruptor. His experiences extend to Head of Network Development & Customer Quality for Audi UK, Retail Director for the online retailer Cinch, Commercial Director for Jardine Motor Group and his role now as COO of a £1bn+ Turnover UK dealer group owned by Marubeni Corporation (Tokyo).


Jerry Page

Compliance Consultant, Radius Law

Jerry has worked in financial services for 35+ years, within the automotive-related field for 25+ years and in a compliance, risk and governance role for 10 years or so. He often compares compliance to visiting the dentist – nobody wants the pain or cost, but they do want to keep their teeth.

Jerry’s five areas of interest are FCA compliance in consumer credit and general insurance; Enterprise Risk Management; KYC, money laundering and financial crime; data protection and corporate governance.

Leo Fielding

Senior Counsel / Solicitor, Shook Hardy Bacon LLP

Leo handles a variety of UK and multinational claims and regulatory issues relating to product liability. In addition to product liability, Leo has experience in advising on complex, cross-border commercial litigation, arbitration, internal investigations and regulatory issues. Before joining SHB, Leo spent six years in the commercial disputes team of Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer in London and has spent time on client secondment at BP.


Lucy McCormick

Barrister, Henderson Chambers

Lucy McCormick is a commercial barrister at Henderson Chambers. She undertakes a variety of product liability and property damage work, and is particularly known for her expertise in relation to Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CAVs). She also contributed to the 1st and 2nd editions of The Law and Artificial Intelligence (Sweet & Maxwell, 2020; 2024), having previously co-authored The Law and Autonomous Vehicles (Routledge, 2019). In 2023 Lucy won the CogX ‘Outstanding Achievements & Research’ award for her work on Tech Regulation.


Mark Finch

Group General Counsel and Company Secretary, Jardine Motors Group

Mark has held the position as Group General Counsel & Company Secretary at Jardine Motors Group, one of the UK’s largest motor retailers, for past 11 years between 2013 and 2024.  In this role, Mark advised the business on a wide and diverse range of legal and risk issues, including business acquisitions and disposals, managing disputes and consumer issues, negotiating contracts and dealing with insurance and compliance issues.  Mark has also been responsible for managing the FCA Compliance and Customer Services teams within the business.  Mark is a qualified solicitor with 30 years of experience and, prior to joining JMG, he worked in private practice, including 16 years with international law firm Eversheds, where he acted for JMG and also specialised in infrastructure and real estate projects on behalf of both private and public sector clients.


Melanie Wiseman

Head of Legal, SMMT

Melanie is Head of Legal at The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders Ltd, having moved into the automotive sector from City private practice more than 25 years ago. As well as providing internal legal services for SMMT and its subsidiaries, Melanie engages with the member in-house legal community to deliver horizon scanning insights and provide sector analysis and positions on the breadth of regulatory and legal/policy issues that affect the automotive supply chain in the UK. This entails working with members, stakeholders, government and regulators to highlight key legal and compliance issues – in an ever-changing environment encompassing new technologies, the post-Brexit landscape and the decarbonisation programme.


Owen Edwards

Head of UK Automotive, Grant Thornton

Owen  is a member of the Grant Thornton Automotive Advisory practice, with responsibility for Automotive Retail Business Consulting

He worked for seven years at Inchcape Plc, the world’s largest independent motor retailer and distributor. For four years, he was the Director of Business Development, undertaking acquisitions and focusing on the strategic positioning of the business across the globe. Prior to this, as Group Strategy Manager, his projects included introducing new brands into emerging markets, restructuring a number of the groups overseas underperforming operations, and compiling the group’s five-year strategy plan.

Prior to joining Grant Thornton he recently advised Marshall Motor Holdings Plc on their floatation on the London Stock Exchange.

Owen has a large range of experience in automotive distribution and retail; global composite, dashboard and KPI analysis; company and financial analysis; strategic 5 year planning.


Rob Elder

Agent for Greater London, Bank of England

Rob joined us the Bank of England in 1998, and for twelve years supported the Monetary Policy Committee as an economist and then senior manager.  Between 2010 and 2012 he represented the UK on the board of the International Monetary Fund in Washington DC. When he returned he worked in the Bank of England’s press office, and most recently, supported their Financial Policy Committee by running a team monitoring developments in the UK banking sector. Rob became the Agent for Greater London in May 2018.

Between 1990 and 1998 Rob worked as an economist and forecaster at HM Treasury, British Telecom and Manchester University. He also taught English in Japan for a year.

Rob studied economics at Manchester University (first degree) and Warwick University (master’s degree).


Sally-Anne Doyle

Manager – FCA Compiance, Stellantis

Sally-Anne is a compliance professional with a distinguished 29-year tenure within the Stellantis UK group. She embarked on her journey with the organisation in 1995 as a Graduate, demonstrating exceptional dedication and talent that propelled her through various pivotal roles within Sales & Aftersales, Field Operations, Customer Care, culminating in a role within Compliance.

Throughout her extensive career, Sally-Anne has garnered insights into the automotive industry, witnessing its evolution and navigating its complexities with finesse. Her multifaceted experience has equipped her with a holistic understanding of diverse operational facets, from frontline engagement to strategic oversight.

In a Compliance role since 2015, Sally-Anne has played a pivotal role in shaping the organisational landscape. She perceives Compliance not merely as a standalone function but as an ethos ingrained in every aspect of the business. Her unwavering belief in the primacy of ethics and integrity underscores her approach, as she champions a culture where doing the right thing is not just a mandate but a guiding principle.

Sally-Anne’s profound grasp of regulatory dynamics and her adeptness in fostering operational agility have positioned her as a linchpin within the corporate governance framework of Stellantis UK. Sandra Martins

Head of Employment, Radius Law

Sandra Martins is the head of the employment department at Radius Law. Sandra has particular experience of advising businesses on IR35, TUPE (including in an insolvency context), corporate transactions, business restructures, redundancies, executive exits and settlement negotiations.

Sandra works closely with HR departments and senior management and provides practical legal guidance on all employment-related issues


Seema Kennedy OBE

Executive Director, Fair Civil Justice

Seema Kennedy was a Government Minister under Theresa May’s Premiership, serving as Immigration Minister and Public Health Minister. Before that she was Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Prime Minister between 2017 and 2019, responsible for relations between MPs and Downing Street during the Brexit negotiations.

Prior to her election to Parliament she worked as a lawyer in the City with involvement on projects including the Emirates Stadium and St Bart’s Hospital before becoming Director of a commercial property business in the North West of England.

Seema has been the Executive Director of Fair Civil Justice since its establishment in 2022. Fair Civil Justice seeks to balance the debate about the legal environment in the UK, shining a light on predatory litigation and unregulated funding. Fair Civil Justice works with consumer groups, trade bodies, corporates and policy makers to achieve the best outcomes for British business, consumers and the legal system.


Simon Smith

Non-Executive Director, The Motor Ombudsman

Simon has worked in various Commercial and Senior Management roles across a range of industries for the past 40 years. His career started as a marine reinsurance broker in Lloyds of London, and he went on to hold a number of roles in the Insurance and Risk Management sector, where he was latterly a Director of Aon Risk Services. He went on to work in a digital agency, then was co-founder of a successful software business in the Aerospace sector which was acquired by an international Avionics supplier. Simon has served as Committee Member on Corporate Governance boards and Operational Review boards. Simon currently holds several Non-Executive Director and Business Advisor roles across a number of industries and is also Trustee and Chair of Trustees to a number of charities.


Tony Campbell

CEO, Motorcycle Industry Association

Tony joined MCIA as the CEO in 2017 leaving his previous role at Managing Director for Piaggio Group. He has enjoyed extensive career in the Motorcycle, wider L-category, and automotive sector both at Manufacturing & Retail. Since joining, Tony has successfully navigated the industry through considerable change and challenges over the last six years, Tony has been instrumental in ensuring that the sector, representing powered, two, three and light four-wheel vehicles (L1 – L7), are integral to the future transport mix. Tony has successfully balanced the need to plan for the future, whilst at the same time ensuring the here and now is not overlooked. The MCIA under Tony’s leadership has published a number of position papers that eventually led to the creation of a joint Government / Sector action plan which set out to challenge several barriers that stifled sector’s growth and fully realise the potential for the future.

One of these barriers is the over complex and costly rider / user licence regime, to address this MCIA, published a proposal to review licencing entitled “A Licence to Net Zero”, this campaign has already attracted Ministerial and DFT support where we hope to make good progress ahead of the next General Election.


Tony Whitehorn

Consultant at T Whitehorn Consultancy Ltd, Former President and CEO Hyundai Motor UK

Tony has been in the automotive industry for more than 30 years holding senior roles at Renault, Toyota and most recently as President and CEO of Hyundai Motor UK. Tony stepped down in 2019 to head up his own consultancy where he advises OEMs, retailers and many other partners in the rapidly growing Mobility arena. He is a lecturer at Business Schools as well as being a Non-Executive Director and Executive Advisor to a few companies in the Automotive Industry.
