On Wednesday, 3rd May 2023, Radius Law and The Motor Ombudsman are coming together to host their Annual Conference – Business & Law Update for the Automotive sector.

We all know the automotive sector is undergoing rapid change, with developments around the future of the car (electrified, autonomous, shared & connected), as well as the new business and retail models being adopted by industry.

Whether it be enforced by legal changes, policy implementation or the demands of the consumer, change is inevitable. Therefore, preparation is required to optimise our transition towards an era of automotive that we have not seen before.

This annual industry event will unpack these issues, explaining how they are likely to impact your business and the changes that you may wish to consider.

Iain Larkins

Director, Radius Law

Iain founded Radius Law in 2013 and leads its automotive practice – one of the largest dedicated automotive law teams in the UK representing automotive manufacturers, retailers, parts suppliers and trade associations.

Prior to establishing Radius, Iain was the Chief Legal and Compliance Officer for the Mercedes-Benz UK Group.

Tony Whitehorn

Consultant at T Whitehorn Consultancy Ltd, Former President and CEO Hyundai Motor UK

Tony has been in the automotive industry for more than 30 years holding senior roles at Renault, Toyota and most recently as President and CEO of Hyundai Motor UK. Tony stepped down in 2019 to head up his own consultancy where he advises OEMs, retailers and many other partners in the rapidly growing Mobility arena. He is a lecturer at Business Schools as well as being a Non-Executive Director and Executive Advisor to a few companies in the Automotive Industry.

Sandra Martins

Head of Employment, Radius Law

Sandra Martins is the head of the employment department at Radius Law. Sandra has particular experience of advising businesses on IR35, TUPE (including in an insolvency context), corporate transactions, business restructures, redundancies, executive exits and settlement negotiations.

She works closely with HR departments and senior management and provides practical legal guidance on all employment-related issues

Maria Johnston

Director and Head of Media Practice, Radius Law

Maria is a commercially focused international lawyer with significant experience advising from an “in-house” perspective.

Recent projects include advising on digital marketing, media, data and privacy, as well as commercial and contractual matters.

Prior to joining Radius, Maria was the Global Legal Chief for MullenLow Profero joining in 2010 to establish the legal function and remained with the business through and after the sale to the Interpublic Group.

Steve Nash

Chief Executive Officer, IMI

Steve has worked in the Motor Industry, on both the retail and manufacturer sides, since graduating in 1977. Steve joined BMW UK in 1986 and was a Director of the company from 1997 to 2012, during which time he held responsibilities for all Group brands, including Rover and Land Rover, during BMW ownership, and, latterly, MINI and Rolls Royce, as well as BMW.

Steve was Chairman of the IMI for five years, before becoming President in November 2009. In 2013 he joined the IMI as Chief Executive Officer.
In addition to his IMI duties Steve is currently Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the industry charity BEN.

Alison Newstead

Partner, Shook Hardy Bacon

Alison’s practice focuses on issues related to safety, risk, compliance and liability. Alison advises clients on a broad spectrum of safety issues that arise in the workplace, in particular those relating to regulatory compliance and investigations and enforcement action taken by the Police, the HSE and local authorities. She advises on duties and liabilities of companies and directors and represents both companies at Magistrate and Crown Court level. Alison provides crisis management in the aftermath of accidents, including fatal accidents. And her practice also encompasses product safety. She advises on regulatory and litigation matters across a wide spectrum of industries and advises companies on risk and liability issues throughout the product lifecycle.

Marc Palmer

Marc Palmer has held key roles at a number of OEM’s including, Ford, Mercedes, Hyundai and Nissan before joining Auto Trader as a Brand Director in 2016. Marc Leads the data and insight work for Auto Trader’s manufacturer and agency customers. Turning billions of data points and market research into simple stories and key themes, from audience behaviour to macro trends, brand challenges to emerging opportunities. He applies his vast industry experience to help the UK’s car brands connect with more buyers.

Christina Calderato

Director of Transport Strategy and Policy at Transport for London

Christina Calderato is the Director of Transport Strategy and Policy at Transport for London. For the last 10 years, she has worked across a diverse range of policy areas at TfL and led the team that developed the current Mayor’s Transport Strategy. In her current role, Christina manages teams leading on freight, road danger reduction, air quality and Healthy Streets.

Sarah Noble

Partner, Supply Chain Transformation, Leader of Women at the Wheel

Sarah is a Partner at Deloitte, leading the Automotive Consulting business in the UK. Sarah is also the founder and leader of Women at the Wheel – a networking group working to drive positive change by supporting women on their automotive career journeys. While working with clients across the industry, she was struck by the lack of diversity in the top roles and the desire to inspire women to grow and succeed in the industry.

Women at the Wheel is guided by three main tenets; to inspire women to achieve their top potential, to encourage collaboration towards gender equality across the industry, and to strengthen women’s careers through providing regular events and a platform for discussion of key issues impacting women. The group now has over +1500 members including both men and women drawn from 220 organisations across the UK automotive sector including all the major manufacturers. As well as leading Women at the Wheel, Sarah coaches others across industries to set-up similar organisations, is a mentor and sponsor across her own network, works with the Automotive Council UK on the diversity & inclusion committee, and is a frequent speaker on gender diversity across the industry.

Melanie Wiseman

Senior Legal Counsel, Legal Services, The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders Limited (SMMT)

Melanie is Senior Legal Counsel at SMMT, having moved into the automotive sector from a City law firm more than 25 years ago. As well as providing internal legal services for SMMT and its subsidiaries, Melanie engages with the member in-house legal community to deliver horizon scanning insights and provide sector analysis and positions on the breadth of regulatory and legal/policy issues that affect the automotive supply chain in the UK. This entails working with members, stakeholders, government and regulators to highlight key legal and compliance issues – in an ever-changing environment encompassing new technologies, the post-Brexit landscape and the decarbonisation programme.

Jerry Page

Compliance Consultant, Radius Law

Jerry has worked in financial services for 35+ years, within the automotive-related field for 25+ years and in a compliance, risk and governance role for 10 years or so. He often compares compliance to visiting the dentist – nobody wants the pain or cost, but they do want to keep their teeth.

Jerry’s five areas of interest are FCA compliance in consumer credit and general insurance; Enterprise Risk Management; KYC, money laundering and financial crime; data protection and corporate governance.

Emily is the current Customer Service Manager of Polestar UK, heading up Customer Engagement, Car Service and Repair Experience for the UK and Ireland. Emily has been in the Automotive Industry for 8 years, having previously worked for Mercedes-Benz Cars UK. In her current role, Emily is responsible for overseeing all aspects of Polestar’s Customer Engagement and aftersales for the UK and Ireland. Over the last year she has successfully inhoused a new 22 person strong customer contact centre, and is building a passionate Polestar Owner’s Community with a difference.

Dr Scott Christy

Carbon Consultant at MyCarbon

Scott spent eight years at the University of Liverpool, completing a Master’s Degree in Chemistry, before undertaking a PhD. A passion for sustainability and making an impact alongside high level technical, analytical, and problem-solving skills are what led Scott to seek a role in the sustainability sector and join MyCarbon. Scott is the MyCarbon lead consultant on SBTi validated emissions reduction targets and net-zero strategies. Scott has worked with some of the UK’s largest companies on developing their emissions reductions strategies to be validated through the SBTi.
